Elevating traditional materials

Anna Hayes-Moeau is a New Zealand Māori artist, designer, and weaver known for her creative weaving that fuses traditional Māori techniques (raranga) with a contemporary, innovative style.

Whakapapa and tikanga

Anna's work is rooted in a deep connection to the land and the knowledge passed down from ancestors and master weavers. She works primarily with sustainable, ethically-sourced native New Zealand materials like harakeke (flax), muka (flax fibre), and pīngao (sand sedge).

Each piece Anna creates adheres to the tikanga (protocols) associated with harvesting and preparing natural materials. The finished object has a whakapapa (genealogy/story) that tells of its origin and transformation.
